LA CONFIDENTIAL

(1997, USA)

Don't read this review, see the film! One of the best films released this year by far. It's an old style gangsters and cops storyline except it is not one sided. There are no particular "bad guys" or "good guys". What makes this film worth watching is a combination of humor, the cast and the violent action. The dialogue and characters are priceless. I forgot to mention the most surprising plot twist ever and a cool confrontation scene. I really I mean really like the cast. Russell Crowe plays muscle bound but intelligent detective Bud White who does everything he has to in order to provide justice but he's not always the good guy. There's isn't a good guy in this film.

Guy pierce is utterly lovable as a newcomer cop who rats out his fellow officers to rise higher in the rankings. Pierce's intelligence, arrogance and reflexes are what make his character enjoyable, but like every character he has his flaws. Then there's sleazy Hush-Hush magazine owner Danny Devito who works with a seedy detective played by Kevin Spacey who is only concerned with being famous. The rest of the cast are: David Straithen,Kim Basinger and James Cromwell. It's all about crooked cops, Hollywood sensationalism and a massacre at a diner that becomes the focal point in the film that brings everything together. Damn fine film old chaps.
