LOST HIGHWAY

(1996, USA)

DIRECTED BY: David Lynch.

Twin Peaks master of the unexplained David Lynch returns for a tale of changing identity and sinful crimes. Lynch has a fascination with architecture and furniture. As far as I understand he makes his own furniture. Lynch is also fascinated with his own mind (he has no ego or nutt'in!). Anyways I really didn't like Fire Walk With Me and I was never a fan of Twin Peaks nor any of his other work (with Elephant Man as an exception). LH on the other hand is not a bad film at all.

It has Bill Pullman killing his wife, the lovely Patricia Arquette. Pullman knows she's cheating on him. Pullman is not a bad actor in this but he needs to speak louder instead of mumbling as I had a hard time hearing a lot of his dialogue. Pullman who we finally see in jail for his crime almost change's his identity or he does so in his mind (either way) so now he looks like he is a young man. The character meets up with Arquette once again except now she has blonde hair and is the girlfriend of a mob boss.

They both have an affair and Arquette devises a plan to live happily ever after. Really entertaining and there's lots of twists and things to think about except don't rack your brain because you'll never figure it completely out. The ending ties in with the beginning. Memorable moments have mob boss Robert Loggia pulling over a tailgater and scaring the shit out of him, a guy gets his head sliced open by a coffee table, there's a nice shooting with a piece of brain flying up in the middle of the screen if you can catch it. Finally a cool looking Rober Blake has a most interesting phone conversation with Bill Pullman.

The whole movie leaves me to believe Lynch didn't want this film to make sense he just wanted for it to be entertaining, make him lots of money and he just wanted to screw peoples minds over.
