MARTIN
(1977, USA)
DIRECTED BY: George A. Romero.
Just before Romero made one of the most well known horror films of all time (Dawn Of The Dead) he released this very entertaining and well done picture. Sure this has it's dumb moments but there is not a perfect film out there lets face it. First role for John Ampla's who plays Martin and does a fine job.
Martin is a young man who is a modern day realistic vampire. This means he isn't affected by superstitious bullshit. He gets blood by using sharp objects to pierce skin. He doesn't have fangs. This movie has a lot of talent and it's interesting delivery makes it just an entertaining film to watch. Tom Savini also stars in a small role. Savini does the effects as well which aren't bad but he's obviously gotten better over time.
As the story goes Martin moves in with his cousin who is some old feller. Martin helps out in his cousins shop and he helps another lady with various odd jobs. On occasion he has to go out and get blood. Martin even becomes a regular star attraction when he calls up a radio talk show, they refer to him as the count on the show.
This has an unexpected conclusion and a chilling ending which makes you think and toys with your emotions. You get to like Martins character as his character is developed throughout, you even feel sorry for him. Romero has a penchant for making thought provoking endings which always have a message about society and how messed up it really is. Good film
