MAXIMUM RISK
ALSO KNOWN AS: Bloodstone.
(1996, USA)
DIRECTED BY: Ringo Lam.
The third offical film outing for newcomer and Newfoundland, Canada beauty Natasha Henstridge. Like the Species review, I dedicate this to her if there was ever a fuck of a chance that she would read it. There's probably a lot more better reviews of this around but what are ya gonna do? I really want to see Ms. Henstridge's second film Adrenalin: Fear The Rush although I heard it was strictly B-movie material(Albert Pyun directed so there's a hint). Hell I might actually like it. The film doesn't seem to be released here like Return Of The Texa's Chainsaw Massacre(whata bitch!) for some reason.
This also has could you say action veteran Jean Claude Van Damme in probably his best role yet I've seen him in(I have'nt seen Double Team yet). No stupid jokes he's just straightedge serious. Van Damme plays a french cop who all of a sudden one day finds out he used to have a twin brother who is killed at the opening of the film. He searches to find out his brothers history and gets in deep shit(up to his neck actually) but he can handle it.
Henstridge plays Alex, a restaurant hostess who used to be his brothers girl. Henstridge and Van Damme must run from the many goons after them. The real bad guys in this are the cops(what a fuck'in surprise!). Some good action, throw in a couple of steamy scenes, one between Van Damme and Henstridge and one which shows Henstridge's tatoo and you have a hit on your hands. I didn't like this though as much as Species. Lams City On Fire was dull and outdone by Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. This is much better though than City On Fire. Decent film but nothing outstanding.
Rating: 3 ½ Skulls
