I don't know where to begin... I'm going to leave the telling of the actual play to someone else. The reason being is as usual I didn't hear but 50% of what was said so I can't give an accurate telling of what has changed in Couplets.
Now for what I can report on... Charles Keating was Debonair as usual. His hair is cut short for him... basically the same length I suppose as what he had it in Port Charles. It started out slicked back some but by the time Victoria bopped him a few times on the head with pillows it was an unruly mass of curls. I wanted to play in them but restrained myself. He's bearded and has a stache yet. The beard was nicely trimmed and looked about as good as I have ever seen it. He was wearing gray trousers, a white tunic that was missing the last button. He was always playing with the bottom of his shirt where that button is missing so it was rather obvious that it was still missing. The button I can report was lost in 1997 in Vincennes and it still hasn't been replaced. I teased him about that. He was wearing black ankle boots. And in general was just as gorgeous as ever. That voice can still melt butter.
Victoria was a picture of loveliness. She was wearing a burgundy satin floor length dress. It's sort of hard to explain... it had ribbing at every straight seam that went to about knee level from there the ribbing became ties and there might be 3 sections tied together lifting the dress off the floor in areas... It worked I guess to keep her from falling over the dress to some extent but she was forever catching her heels in the back of it. And more than once swayed trying to stand back up and get her shoes unhooked. The top of the dress was somewhat a bustier (sp) thing. It came up about half way over her breast and then there was a slight row of ruffle that gave way to sheer tulle like material that went to her neck. It had a Deep V neck and in the center of this V she had put the microphone. It was pretty but I half expected an exposé every time she bent over. (She didn't bend over much, probably a good thing). The sleeves where the same sheer material as the upper bodice and came down well over half-way over her hands and then had a small seam of satin along the end of the sleeve. The back of the dress had a corset type lacing up the back. But the zipper was actually in the front wear the Deep V began. She was wearing shoes and stockings to match and more than once flashed those Gams of hers. Gees I'd kill for legs like that LOL.
Victoria's hair was basically as we know it from the show. Still a rich chocolate color, cut bangs and a little longer than shoulder length. She looked very much as we remember her. Three years hasn't changed her much. She's still stick thin maybe a tad bit heavier but I really don't think so.
They had a lot of fun as usual. They bantered and giggled and the play itself was much bawdier than they did when it was in Vincennes but I knew they had cut some of the play out then because they felt the audience wouldn't be receptive. Then when I saw it in Muscatine they had trouble with doing some of the bawdy stuff because we were in a Church and it kept cracking them up. So I'm not certain as to how much was actually new material and how much was stuff they normally did but had cut out in the other 2 times I've seen this show.
Most of the time I gave up trying to hear the words... I can't concentrate that hard for that long on hearing. So I would just watch them and even that was fun. Charles still makes the crowd cry with "the Crabbit Woman" and this time there was a scene where Victoria recited something and it had her in tears as well. That was the first time I have seen her cry during this show. I suspect it was a new poem, verse, as I don't remember the actions that she went through from before.
After the show Charles said Thanks for coming... actually he said more than that but I didn't understand and when I asked another patron that was the synopsis she gave me. Most of the theater cleared out but about 20 of us remained to see if Charles and Victoria would come back out. There was no reception this time... I don't have a clue if they explained why or not. About 5 minutes after the play was over Victoria and Charles did come out and met with us that had waited for them.
Sue... who takes pictures for SOD and the other Mags was there and she had them pose and took multiple shots of them. I talked briefly with Victoria and a bit more with Charles. But their time was limited so no one really got to talk much.

Victoria and me. Carolyn Williams took the picture and chopped off the top of Victoria's head. For some reason the lighting made me come out looking like a ghost. |
