Based on the true story of Karen Silkwood (played by Meryl Streep), an employee of the Oklahoma Kerr-McGee plutonium plant who blew the whistle about the extremely dangerous conditions at the plant. Karen Silkwood died in a mysterious car accident. The circumstances of her death are still under debate. Silkwood received 5 Academy Award Nominations, including Best Director, Best Actress--Meryl Streep, and Best (Original) Screenplay. The film is a fairly accurate recounting. About a year after her death the plutonium plant was shut down.
Kurt Russell plays Drew Stephens, who is Meryl Streep's boyfriend in the film. He played his role out reasonably well.
The audience does not really begin to see his true acting abilities until the film approaches
towards the end. I thought that this film was well done for its genre. However, it wasn't very
appealing to me because it was lacking in suspense. I do believe that the story of Karen
Silkwood is a very powerful and essential story, in order for people to realize that it is
important not to create unsafe work conditions, both for our environment and ourselves.
But because the film is lacking greatly in suspense and entertainment, I feel that it only
deserves about a 6 out of 10.
