movies

i was going to get rid of this page, but then the more i thought about it, the more i realized there are plenty of movies out there worthy of some mention here.  so here it is.  my all-time favorites take up most of the space, while others get a brief mention.  there are plenty of pics, so if anything, just soak up the eye candy.

ever after

ever after is a movie based on the classic fairy tale cinderella, although it is different in many aspects.  the story is beautifully written.  drew barrymore once again is adorable and so gosh darn lovable.  the first time i saw this movie was last night on hbo, and i fell in love with it.  now i know what my friend jenny has been raving about for so long!  what a great movie!  anyways, i'll give a quick synopsis...or the best i can remember.  ahh, hell.  my mind is so fuzzy.  well, you know the story of cinderella - so just think of it as that but better!  yes, much better.
i really should watch it again so i can do it justice here.

shawshank redemption

ok, this is by far my all-time fave movie.  i just love it.  it's a movie based on stephen king's hope springs eternal, a short story.  and it certainly helps that 2 of my favorite acotrs have the starring roles, tim robbins and morgan freeman.  it's about a man who is wrongly imprisoned in shawshank.  now, i won't give away any of the best plot lines because i strongly encourage you to check this movie out for yourself.   but i can't rave enough about this one.  it's just so damn good.  good story.  good acting.  no matter how many times i watch it (and i do watch it a lot - my tape is even worn), i never get tired of it.

the basketball diaries

ok, i know most of you aren't big leonardo dicaprio fans, and rightfully so, but this is his best movie.  at least, it is in my opinion.  the basketball diaries is a movie based on the life of poet jim carol.  it touches upon such topics as drugs, sex, and friends.  you follow jim (played by dicaprio) through his downward spiral into deep drug addiction.  it is a very powerful and touching movie, and one that is an all-too common tale among high school kids.  i know it's made me think twice about doing some things. 

kids in the hall:  brain candy

ahh...another kids in the hall mention.  why?  because i love 'em!  anyway, brain candy is their first and only full-length movie.  there is a reason for that.  it was a huge flop.  only dedicated fans and comedy enthusiasts went to go see this one.  granted, it probably would've done better had they just expanded on one of their wildly popular characters like the chicken lady or gavin.  but i, for one, am glad they did not chose that route.  staying true to their form in not giving into what everyone expects, the kids instead wrote a hilariously funny script based on a drug that cures depression.  in my opinion, the movie is great.  i don't care what anyone (including the kids themselves) say, i enjoyed it.  although it's an obvious satirical comedy, it touches on sensitive topics.  one clear message i got is that there is no 'quick cure' for depression or any other illness. another shines through in scott thompson's portrayal of a gay man who is married and also has children.  he takes the drug (gleemonex) and declares that he's gay.  then everyone sings a song, but in the end say 'who cares?'   all in all, a movie i would rent over and over again, if only to see dave as 'marv.'
