MY EYES HAVE SEEN, VANGUARD, 1959 A fine album of classic American folk songs and spirituals. Odetta burst into the American folk scene with this recording. A great record to start a career with a great way to begin exploring Odetta's music. This record has recently become available on cd. |

BALLAD FOR AMERICANS, VANGUARD, 1959 Well, I am listening to BALLADS FOR AMERICANS for the 10th time now, and I feel ready to tell you what I think of the record. I think it's GREAT! One side of the record is great old American folk standards such as This Land, On Top Of Old Smokey, Hush Little Baby, Going Home. My favorite is Great Historical Bum. I can really hear Odetta's humor and humanity during this wonderful song. The other side is Ballad for Americans. Ballad for Americans is an historical work that tells the story of the Americans that built this country and made it what it was. This record, (and others like it) should be in every classroom and every library in the country. They should be required listening. This record is a beautiful, innocent and earnest piece of work. |

ODETTA AND THE BLUES, VANGUARD, 1962
Some folks say this is a case of a fine folksinger taking a turn at the Blues. In my opinion this is a case of a voice for the ages singing what comes natural, in this case the Blues. Listen to "Hard, Oh Lord," or "How Long Blues," and you will know what the blues is. All famous blues songs that were done first by ladies at the very top of their game. Yet Odetta makes each song her own. A great performance.

THE ESSENTIAL ODETTA, VANGUARD, 1973 A beautiful compilation and probably the one most new fans cut their teeth on, it has many of Odetta's most powerful and popular songs. That may be what concerns me most; this collection should not take the place of such a tremendous artists' complete body of work. |

ODETTA SINGS FOLK SONGS, RCA, 1963 This is Odetta at the top of her game. She is the Queen of American Folk and she proves it with this album. All the songs are American classics and she makes them her own and then gives them away as a present to the world. (I never said I was impartial).
