Auto-View

United, Tacoma

Update: The Tacoma Public Library has several photos of drive-ins in its on-line database. One photo caption there says that an earlier location of the Auto View was destroyed by fire in 1948 and rebuilt at its later location. The earlier location was 103rd Street and South Tacoma Way, where Highway 512 enters from the east today. A careful search of their photo archives reveals a photo of the drive-in right at that location, on the east side of the road. The interchange with Interstate 5 is at that location. See map. The bend in South Tacoma Way gives the exact location.

Go to search.tpl.lib.wa.us/images/default.asp, enter "drive-in theaters" in the first text entry field, then go down to what is currently photo 7 of 9. There you can see what I am supposing is the old Auto View in the foreground, even though their caption says it is the Star-Lite. You can actually see the Star-Lite in the top background of the photo. Photo 2 of 9 shows what they suppose to be the newer Auto View shortly after construction. This site uses dynamic addressing (and heavy watermarking on the photos) so I can't provide direct links here.
