Update: I suspected that this theater had at least a late season because it was still open when a storm blew down the screen in late November of 1998. I found that it is actually open all year, so I went there in early February 2002 to get my drive-in fix. Wow, a drive-in in Washington State that is open all year! It helps that Oak Harbor is behind the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains to keep things a little dry, though there were deep pools of water between the rows, left over from last week’s snow falls. Another reason it's open all year round could be that it is near a military base, and so this is also one of the few drive-ins left that plays the national anthem before the feature. The place seemed to be almost completely full, too. Though the FM radio sound had a little hum during the quiet scenes, if I leaned back just right I could have sworn I heard surround effects in my car radio. I don't even have a surround sound decoder installed in my car, but it sounded like dialogue was in front, and surround sounds were going front to back. The screen image was bright, but the 1.85:1 image was horizontally off-center. Because the image for the two particular movies showing that night didn't use the full width of the screen, this wasn't a problem. By looking back at the projection booth you could see reels moving on a tower system for transporting the film. Another neat feature is that they have squeegies and washer fluid at each row for cleaning your car window before the show. Because I arrived after dark, I didn't notice the dirt on my windsheild that I would be staring at before the movie started.
