Robert Downey Jr.
(Terry Crabtree)
Biography
American actor Robert Downey, Jr., the son of filmmaker Robert Downey, first appeared onscreen at the age of five in his father's film Pound (1970); he went on to make cameo appearances in five more of his father's films between 1972-90. His first significant role, in Baby, It's You (1983), largely ended up on the cutting-room floor. He went on to supporting parts in a series of teen-oriented films, finally landing the male lead opposite Molly Ringwald in The Pick-Up Artist (1987). Meanwhile, he gained much recognition during a year spent in the regular cast of the weekly sketch-comedy TV series Saturday Night Live. He has maintained a steady film career but has yet to appear in a major hit. His most compelling performance was in the title role of Richard Attenborough's biopic Chaplin (1992), for which he earned an Oscar nomination for "Best Actor." He continues to garner both leading (Heart and Souls (1993), Only You (1994)) and supporting (Natural Born Killers (1994)) roles. -- All-Movie Guide
