My Summer With Des

Des Lynam has got what it takes to make it big in Hollywood. That is the verdict of the sports supremo's first leading lady, Rachel Weisz, who stars alongside him in a new BBC1 drama My Summer With Des.

On his TV acting debut, our man in the studio gets the role his legions of  fans believe he was born to play - God.

And it turns out he is a roaring success.

"Des has more charisma than practically any actor I've ever come across," Rachel said. "He's got real movie star eyes and that slow-burn, smouldering quality. I think he would be very good in a leading role.

"The main thing you need in films is charisma and he really has that - without trying. He's got pots of it."

Des, affectionately known as the "housewives' favourite", appears in the one-off drama with Weisz and Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey. The comic love story, which is set around the events of Euro 96, goes out on BBC1 on May 25.

Rachel reckons the BBC's World Cup anchorman is an "incredible listener" and reveals a new side to the BBC's World Cup anchorman:

"I would happily talk to him for hours about anything. We talked about everything but football - he said he didn't particularly like talking about football."

And Des himself seemed to take the challenges of acting in his stride.

"I was playing Des rather than being Des," he said. "Although of course there's not a vast difference between the two."
