Someday was Mariah's third number one hit.

The single cover Someday was the third single from Mariah’s debut album. It was released in January 1991 and after entering the charts, it peaked to #1 spot on March 9, 1991, where it stayed for two weeks. Mariah became one of the few artists, who had their three debut singles on #1. Jackson's Five had four and she reached their record with her next single...
For Someday Mariah worked with Ben Margulies and this was one of the four songs from the famous demo tape, Tommy Mottola received at that party. Mariah selected Ric Wake for the producer and he remembers:
‘I loved that song right from the beginning... Than Mariah called me one day and said ‘I’d love to do it if you want to do it.’ It was great. I am glad she called me.’
The album cover Someday was Mariah’s first dance track on the album. Even on the demo tape Ben and Mariah tried to make it sound like a dance hit, but production in the studio made it much easier. There were many things that were promising Someday to be a hit. Mariah had a chance to use her high octaves again, the song had a nice bouncy rhythm, great melody. Some parts sounded more like a soft rap than a dance song... Some critics judged Mariah’s dance style, somebody even marked her as ‘a dance droid’, but people liked the song and Mariah, what is the only thing that counts.
The single came out in various versions with different remixes of Someday: New 12" Jack Swing, New 12" House, New 7" Straight...

Beautiful Mariah The video for Someday was directed by Larry Jordan, who worked with Mariah also on some of her later videos. They filmed the video at high school in Bayonne, New Jersey. Mariah came up with the idea for the story about a boy and a young girl, based on herself (she even looks a little like Mariah). The video also shows kids in classes, having fun, dancing, playing ball. Mariah had most fun working with a group of six- to twelve- year old kids, who also appeared in the video. Among those kids, there was a very talented six years old hip-hop dancer, who had everybody’s attention. Mariah also featured a street drummer Larry Wright. Of course we can also see Mariah in the video, dressed in a black sweater and blue jeans.
The video came out in two versions: the original and the remix.

The Lyrics:
[To the top]

Someday

You were so blind to let me go
You had it all but didn't know
No one you'll ever find will be
Closer to all your dreams than me
Believing the grass would be greener
You told yourself "I just don't need her now"
But I know you'll soon discover
You're never satisfied with any other

Chorus:
Someday Oo Someday
One you gave away will be the only one you're wishing for
Someday hey hey
Boy you're gonna pay 'cause baby I'm the one who's keeping score

You'll change your mind and call my name
Soon as you find they're all the same
And when you find yourself alone
Don't come back crying
You should have known
Believe me I'm not pretending
It's not hard to predict
This ending now
'Cause I know you'll soon discover
You're needing me in spite of all the others

Chorus

Maybe now you just can't conceive
That there'll ever come a time when you're cold and lonely
Baby, how could you ever believe
That another could replace me
The one and only
But when your down
In your time of need
And you're thinking that you
Might be coming back to own me
Just think again 'cause
I won't need your love anymore!

Chorus
