While it seems like a Brooksfilm with it's witty dialogue and zany dance numbers, it seems awfully toned down. In many of Brook's earlier roles where he played the main character his preformance seemed just too funny to be the main character. Kinda like Leslie Nielson in the Naked Gun movies, he gets old quick even though he's hilarious. Mel needs a smaller part like Gov. Lepetomane, Tikon, President Skroob, or even Yogurt. He worked great in those, but not as Dr. Thorndyke (High Anxiety) or Comicus/every-other-character-in-the-film (History of the World Part I). But here he is toned down and he's not too funny, but he's not funny enough. It's inbetween. While Mel may not be at his comedic peak, the rest of the cast is hilarious and the movie is a comedy gem which I do recommend. 8 out of 10.

Hilarious remake of the Ernst Lubitsch classic. Brooks tackles one of
his favorite themes, the Nazis, head on in this story of an actor in
Poland during the Nazi invasion in World War II. 3 and a half out of 4.
