Molly knocked lightly on the door to Lily's room before pushing it open. She was momentarily shocked when she saw that the bed was empty. A pained gasp came from behind the screen in the corner.
"Lily?" Molly set the tray down on the bedside table.
"You're going to have to help me, cher." Lily stepped out from behind the screen her right hand holding her chest. She had managed to dress herself, all except for buttoning the last half dozen buttons on the back of the dress.
"You're not even supposed to be out of bed. Mr. Jackson said that you should take it easy." Molly crossed the room and took hold of Lily's arm helping her back to the bed. "You said last night that it still hurt to breathe and you're ankle's still swollen."
"Cher, I've been in this bed for nearly a week. I can't spend another day in it. I'm well enough to go downstairs." Molly sighed in exasperation knowing that she wouldn't be able to change Lily's mind.
A few minutes later the two women descended the stairs to the saloon. JD Dunne jumped up from where he sat and took hold of Lily's arm and led her to the table where Buck and Ezra sat. Ezra's splintered leg rested on a chair and JD pulled up another one to do the same with Lily's ankle.
"Thank you, JD."
"It is lovely to see you up and around Lily." Ezra tried to smile but Lily could see the concern in his face. She knew that out of anyone in this town he was the one bearing the most guilt about Bryn.
"Has there been any news?" Ezra shook his head slowly.
"Rest of the boys are out now. I hate to say it but Vin said something yesterday before they left that the trail's gettin' cold. He didn't . . ." Buck's voice trailed off as Ezra's face fell.
"We just have to keep her in our prayers." Lily lifted her ankle off of the chair. "Molly?" Molly came over from the next table where she had been chatting with JD. "Help me to the church, won't you, cher?"
The midday sun streamed through the dusty windows of the church casting a golden light. The two women knelt at the front each praying silently for Bryn's safe return. Lily stood slowly being careful not to put too much weight on her ankle. She took a seat on a pew and waited for Molly to finish.
Molly stood and turned slowly toward Lily. "Do you think she's . . .?" The young woman couldn't bring herself to finish the sentence.
"We must think only good thoughts, cher." The thought of another person in her life dying brought tears to Molly's eyes. Lily watched the younger woman wiping the tears from her cheeks. "You've lost someone before. Who was it, cher?"
Molly sat quiet unable to speak. Taking care of Lily the last few days had brought back all the memories of sitting at her mother's bedside while she was sick. She had kept her feeling about her mother's death bottled inside for so long she didn't know how to let them out.
"I was married once." Molly turned toward Lily's words. "You didn't know that did you? Well, I'm not surprised. I don't tell many people."
"Wha . . what happened to your husband?"
"He died. He was sick for several months and finally," Lily paused "finally he was granted peace."
"My . . . my mother, she died almost two years ago."
"You two were close?"
"Yes, I left school in order to take care of her." The two women sat silently for several minutes before Molly spoke again. "Were you close to your mother?"
"I'm sorry to say, no I wasn't. My mother found me to be a terrible embarrassment to the family. She probably still does."
"How long has it been since you've seen her?"
"Half a lifetime and then some. When I was out there under those rocks I thought about my family. It occurred to me that if I died out there, they would never know. As it is, I don't even know if they're still alive."
Molly could see that the thought disturbed Lily. Molly tried to think of something reassuring to say. Lily gasped suddenly startling Molly.
"Lily? What's wrong?"
"When I was trapped under the rocks. I saw someone. Let's go back to the saloon. I need to talk with Ezra." The two women moved as fast as Lily could manage. Molly could tell by the strain on her face that Lily was putting too much pressure on her ankle. By the time they reached the saloon she was drawing ragged breaths and clutching her side.
JD jumped up from his chair to help Molly bring Lily the last few feet to the table. Ezra poured a shot of whiskey and pushed it across the table to her. He looked at Molly questioningly.
"She said she remembered something and had to come back over here to tell you about it." Lily gulped down the whiskey and took a moment to catch her breath. The pain in her chest was lessening.
"Lily? Are you alright?"
"I'll be fine. I remembered something about the rockslide." Parts of that day were still black for her. After waking up in her room in the saloon, she had remembered hearing the rocks falling and the feeling of being thrown from her horse. The rest of the day was blurry until KC had appeared and removed her from the rocks.
"What is it?" Ezra sat up in his chair.
"After the rocks came down, before I passed out. There was someone there, someone on top of the hill. A man."
"Do you know who?"
"I don't know his name. But he was very familiar. Dark hair, somewhat heavy," Lily paused trying to remember something more "his nose, sharp, hawk-like."
Ezra felt the hairs on the back of his neck prickle. The description sounded much like a man that had been in town. But Ezra hadn't seen him since . . . since Bryn had disappeared.
"Damn." Ezra swore under his breath. "Lily, this man, what was he wearing?"
"Wearing? I don't know."
"Please, think hard." Lily's brow furrowed as she closed her eyes and tried to remember the man. She put herself back on the ground, under the rocks.
"His clothes were . . . nice. He was well dressed. Almost like," Lily opened her eyes and looked at Ezra, "almost like yours."
"Did he say anything to you?"
"No, he didn't. He just rode away."
"Ezra? What is it? You know who it is, don't ya?" Buck looked at his friend.
"There was a gentleman in town up till a few days ago. He was from New Orleans, or so he said. He matches the description Lily just gave. He said his name was Louis Blanchard."
"Louis Blanchard? Do you know where he is?" Terrance had been walking by when the name caught his attention.
"Do you know him Terrance?" Lily thought she knew everyone that Terrance knew.
"The man left town with a $20 bar tab unpaid." Terrance stomped away upset by the idea of the lost money.
"Do you think that's who took Bryn?"
"Well all the information does seem to point toward him." Ezra's eyes met Buck's. "I believe Mr. Larabee said that we could reach them in Eagle Bend?"
"Yea, Chris said if anything came up to send a wire to Eagle Bend and they'd get it." Buck knew what they needed to do next. "JD, help me over to the telegraph office. We got a wire to send."
