The Third Society is an unusual type of action movie in that its main character is a female cop named “Jones”. Granted, there have been other female action heroes, but aside from Sigourney Weaver’s “Ripley”, how many can you name? Sure, the ladies in Charlie’s Angels looked great and kicked butt, but how much of the action was done by stunt doubles? And how much of the action relied on goofy T&A?
In The Third Society, Jones is hard-boiled all the way. And as Jones, J.A. Steel does all her own stunts, from riding a motor-cycle through a ball of flame, to going one-on-one in a brutal martial arts fight with the male villain. And that’s because J.A. Steel does this kind of stuff in real life. (Well, no, she isn’t really a crime-fighting super hero.) Steel studied Muay Tai in Tailand – one of the only women to do so – and has competed professionally. She’s ridden motorcycles as long as she can remember. In the film world, Steel has worked with the legendary Sho Kosugi, undisputed king of the ninja movie! (And yet, while shooting the fund-raising trailer for The Third Society, many of the male crew members tried to prevent Steel from doing such dangerous stunts as simply riding a motorcycle into a shot – something she does as a hobby!)
The Third Society is currently in post-production, undergoing ADR and last-minute post-sound. Hopefully, The Third Society will make Steel a bucket of money and will enable her to make her next film, The Vertex an even better, more exciting action/adventure, where filled with women who in no way are waiting to be rescued.
