Mission Control in Houston makes the decision is to use the Aquarius Lunar Module as a life boat. The Command Module systems are failing quickly.
The astronauts rush to set up shop in Aquarius and stabilize the Odyssey.
Houston Control and the Apollo 13 Astronauts continue to work on the ailing systems and determine just what has happened. There's no way for them to see the outside of the ship, but a cloud of gas and debris continually drift past the windows.
Hunkered down in Aquarius, the Apollo 13 astronauts face new challenges. The docked spacecraft are not on a free return trajectory. A burn of the Aquarius descent engine is required to bring the spacecraft on a trajectory behind the Moon and back to Earth. To complicate matters, the LEM batteries can't power the systems for the entire return trip. They're only going to last for 45 hours, half of what is needed. A combination of a second, long Aquarius burn and a nearly complete power shutdown will be required if the astronauts are to make it back home.
