LtCmdr Vymora Einicrox visits Lt Epona O'Leary on the holodeck. Epona is
still using a simulation to work out defenses and evasive maneuvers against
plutonium rockets. Vymora tells Epona that her actions prove that she is
still herself. Epona is glad about that comment and then shows her findings
to Vymora. Epona has found that there is no way to evade the rockets
completely. She has a bad feeling about the mission but can't explain why.
When LtCmdr Kallesin n'Galeda joins them he too is shown Epona's findings
and offers several ideas on how to defend the ship against a possible rocket
attack in addition to Epona's piloting skills. All three officers decide to
work further on these plans.
After she has learned as much as she can from the simulation Epona sets off
to go see Cmdr Nova'Song. She demands from the XO an explanation for
Nova'Song's
previous canceling of her help. Nova'Song tells her about the bond they
shared in the past and that she feared that her own strength would damage
Epona's mind. Withholding the bond puts a strain on Nova'Song but she is
willing to do this to protect Epona further. Epona explains to Nova'Song
that she is getting stronger and proves that she has developed a new
empathic ability during her absence. Nova'Song is surprised but finally
offers to teach Epona how to live with it. Epona asks her not to tell too
many people about it. Ending the informal meeting Nova'Song orders Epona to
have regular weekly counseling sessions for the time being.
Epona gives her word to see the counselor and immediately leaves to make an
appointment. LtCmdr Gendry Lockhart welcomes her and is aware of her dislike
for being ordered to see him. They agree to meet for breakfast the next
morning to make it easier for Epona.
Kallesin is in the Science Labs studying the specs of the two warships that
are following them. He is trying to find a way to tweak HORIZON's systems to
a higher performance to enable the use of a plasma weapon to counter
possible attacks with plutonium rockets. His work is making progress and is
a fascinating entertainment for Lt Melody Cuen and two new cadets.
Kallesin doesn't mind their amusement but reminds his subordinates to find
work for themselves.
Vymora is on a holodeck in a demonstration of Deserte assassination
techniques. She is very impressed with the skills of Morset, one of Crown
Prince Tamal's bodyguards. Besides preparing for the safety of the Prince
she also has set up a group of security personnel to watch over Epona. Later
she sees Akeen, who is still intent on winning her back. In a simulation of
an Andorian spa Akeen has further insults for Kallesin and even Vymora
instead of really wooing her. She reminds him that she is spending time with
him only because he blackmailed her and that even the issue of motherhood is
no reason for her to give up Kallesin and return to Akeen.
Kallesin later meets Vymora in their shared quarters. She tells him about
the date with Akeen and that the Andorian has already asked for a second
one. She purposely forgets to tell Kallesin that she has already turned down
that invitation and is very happy when Kallesin asks her to postpone the
date because prior the real start of the mission he wants to spend as much
time as possible with Vymora. Even an expensive present from Akeen,
delivered by a curious Blirb, cannot seriously change her mind.
Epona is in her quarters caressing her pet after readying Vymora's message
about the work-out plan Vymora has created for her when memories from her
past surface. She remembers that she speaks Vulcan and Gaelic and that she
knows how to play the harp. She plays a haunting tune and someone outside in
the corridor stops a moment to listen.
The night is not refreshing for Epona as sleep eludes her and questions
about her past plague her. In the morning she starts Vymora's exercise
program to find that she is completely out of shape. Afterwards she meets
Lockhart for their first appointment. During the breakfast conversation
Epona learns that Lockhart will be on Deserte and able to get her to talk to
him all the time. She tells him about the things she can remember. Lockhart
wants her to write down everything she remembers about the time she was
missing and sets the next appointment for early the following morning. Since
she believes he means well Epona agrees.
Later, when Epona is on duty on the bridge she finds out that Vymora has
organized a security detail as her bodyguards. While she knows she herself
asked for it, it rankles with her that she will be under constant
surveillance and is slightly furious. She leaves the bridge for a quick meal
and to do the homework Lockhart has assigned her. While she is in the lounge
to eat and write she fells that the whole situation is wrong. The next
morning she is in the CNS's office on time. She hands Lockhart her notes and
tells him about her conclusion that her disappearance and her newly awakened
empathy are central to the Deserte mission and she still can't say why. But
she wants to continue to trust her gut feeling.
In the Science Labs, the new cadet T'Gori from Vulcan is reading up on
Deserte. Her colleague Cdt Risso is doing likewise. Both find the culture on
Deserte worthy of discussion, if from different angles. On the side they
discuss Kallesin's lack of emotions and is apparently perfect logic. Risso
realizes that T'Gori envies the android.
LtCmdr Jack Palance is the nightly wanderer that stopped and listened to
Epona's harp. The music helps him to get closer to solving some puzzles of
his own.
On the bridge, Crown Prince Tamal Jehune is sitting next to Cpt Burke as the
HORIZON will arrive at Deserte soon. The senior officers are all present at
their stations, monitoring the two warships. Burke has the ship and crew get
ready for a possible red alert and orders the Marines to stand by as the
HORIZON crosses the Telmarc Cease Fire Line.
