Notes:

The Sijan class of rapid troop deployment transports have been introduced
in the late 2390s, along with the Warbee class. Its purpose was to fill
the gap between ordinary transport vessels, and starfleet's space combat
vessels.

It became clear that this kind of vessel was needed when the Marines
lacked a suitable operations platform during the assault on Xena-4 in
2388. Highly specialized vessel's such as the Samurai class were both
to small and specialized to just refit in order to fit Marine mission
profiles. On the other hand, ordinary transport vessel's lacked the
shielding and weaponry that was needed in order to sustain minor
attacks by planetary defensive systems.

The Sijan class also incorporates the much needed Warbee and APC Hangar,
that allows for quick preparation, maintenance, and deployment of these
vehicles. The Sijan can deploy her warbees within 3 minutes and recover
them in less than two hours, if required.

The ship does not resemble a conventional starfleet vessel. A saucer
section does not exists at all, for it is not needed. The Sijan class in
it's design is very down to earth, and luxuries such as laboratories and
research facilities do not exist. All space is used for military purposes,
including three holodecks. It's bridge serves two major functions. (1)
during spaceflight it serves as the standard primary control area for
spaceflight operations, and (2) during planetary assault missions it serves
as the intelligence/surveilance center for the theater of operations on
the planetside.

The Sijan has extensive sensory equipment for ground surveillance and
lifeform detection as well as communication equipment to coordinate
operations.

Sijan class vessels usually do not operate without coverage from a
Starfleet vessel against surprise reinforcements. They often are used in
task forces as mainstay for troup deployment in areas where warbee
dropships are required, since the Sijan is much better suited for this
purpose than any other ship in Starfleet.

The design was originally created by Sherman Johns.
