For years many students of A Course in Miracles hesitated to really open their hearts and totally love Christianity in all its myriad forms. There was speculation that maybe when these students were very young the areas of Christianity they could see did not appeal to them. Another guess had it that maybe early in life they did give Christianity their heart and soul, but ultimately they became disillusioned, as if a love affair had gone sour.
Whatever the reason, if there is any blockage of love in our conscious or subconscious mind, a certain reflectivity in the world will be created ... true or false? What do you suppose might very well have been seen in the world of Course students who had not allowed themselves to totally love Christianity?
If you guessed that such students might have seen some Christians fearing and hating A Course in Miracles, calling it a "
demonic cult," a "
New Age fraud
," and "
A Course in Brainwashing
," then you have a pretty good idea how things work.
Jesus teaches:
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."
(Matthew 22: 37-40)
Needless to say, the above two commandments constitute the totality of the teaching of A Course in Miracles. But Christians who look into the Course will see what they want to see, wouldn't you say? Those who are bent on fearing the Course will see reflections of their own fear, wouldn't you imagine?
Yet the crucial understanding Jesus would have us see is that the second commandment is merely a restatement of the first commandment; that our neighbor is us, and that it is not God or our neighbor who needs the experience of our love. We need the experience! When we love God totally, we are total love. When we love our neighbor totally, we are total love. It is this experience of being total love which we most need and crave.
Guess what we might see in our world when we love our neighbor totally?
Guess what users of the Course might see when they give themselves permission to love Christians with all their heart and soul and mind?
What if the reflection they would see is Christians loving them and embracing them and admitting that A Course in Miracles really is Christianity?
Guess what Christians will surely see if they allow themselves to love users of A Course in Miracles with all their heart and soul and mind?
Those with eyes to see know that Christianity actually does teach A Course in Miracles and the Course truly does teach Christianity. When only love guides our sight it becomes clear that formerly apparent differences were the result of formerly seeing poorly. We come to understand why Jesus tells us again and again that whoever is withholding total love is not seeing straight.
Over the years, we've watched Episcopalians, Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, and Born-Again Christians of all brands happily and with great relief embrace the three books of A Course in Miracles. We've also observed dedicated students of A Course in Miracles as they followed their spiritual guidance and became ministers, priests, and laymen in all kinds of Christian denominations.
Those who have written that A Course in Miracles is demonic, fraud, and brainwashing were calling for love. They were telling us they still believed there was something to fear, the exact opposite of the teaching of Jesus.
"Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows." (Luke 12:7)
"Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." (Luke 12:32)
"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love." (1 John 4:18)
As Course users open to more and more love are we beginning to see Christians everywhere lovingly admitting they are really students of A Course in Miracles? As Christians open to their inherent joy will Course students come to look at every Christian denomination and delightfully say "Yes, Jesus teaches here!" Can we see the time when all lovers of Jesus Christ are laughing together as their one and only teacher laughs? Do we sense the coming day when temporary seeming conceptual differences no longer get in the way of love?
We say to Course students ... rejoice, for you will be invited to speak at Christian gatherings! And joining will occur! For you are all love and only love!
We say to Christians ... you are already teaching A Course in Miracles! Never again allow a handful of fearful ministers and writers turn you away from the total love that you are!
Does anyone need to argue about concepts and semantics? Consider the lilies of the field. Do they feel the need to intellectually debate whether their neighbor lilies have eaten or not eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?
If the end is really so near as many say, is there really any need convince anyone of anything or convert anyone? What would Jesus say about Christians feeling the need to "convert" Course students or Course students feeling the need to "win over" Christians?
Surely he would laugh! Undoubtedly he would say: "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well." (Matthew 6:33)
