Wonder of Wonders!

"Under no circumstance are you to be at peace and be happy!" This is the guidance received by a small portion of the U.S. voting population who did not like the results of last month's election. We call such guidance "Eeeeeego guidance." After the election, some simply screamed "Eeeeee!" Some wanted to go ... to Canada to live.

Fortunately for our country about 53% of voters were happy with the election, feeling inside themselves: "I am joyous!" Whether we personally liked the results or not, it is good to know a great many people are feeling fulfilled.

As with most elections, among those who would have preferred different results there was also evidence of good sportsmanship. "Good game! It would be nice if we could win next time, but I guess I'll choose happiness!" These are the ones who have decided to go on with their lives pretty much as before. We thank these dear ones for teaching the world how to choose peace.

Since the election, a few very lucky people have been heard saying, "You know, maybe I should take another look at the man who won and see him in a different light."

Wonder of wonders!

These lucky ones are the ones who have heard their spiritual guidance ... guidance which without fail suggests we see people in a whole new light. Or to simplify ... to see them in light in the first place.

Guess what happens when we make a consciousness decision to see someone in light?

Try it ... and see what happens. If you haven't always seen President Bush in the brightest light, one very delightful book which might help is the fun story 10 Minutes from Normal by former White House Counselor Karen Hughes, which will become available in paperback this month.

Just as there are two ways to view people ... to see them in light which shows us wonders upon wonders, or to see them through the dreary clouds of our inevitably incorrect judgments ... so also there are two ways to view books and documents.

We all know that the Holy Bible or the Holy Koran have been seen by some in such bright open-minded light that they have been opened to glories upon glories. On the other hand, there are atheists and intellect-addicts who see these holy books through dense clouds of arrogance: "This is not logical!" "It makes no sense!" "I'll believe it when it's proven to me!"

Those who have used A Course in Miracles, which is modern revelation from Jesus Christ, have found that unbelievably amazing gifts are given when the Course is seen in light. Astute teachers of the Course even tell their students: "Don't try to understand it intellectually. Just read it with appreciation and allow it work on you. It is Jesus himself!"

There are well-meaning Christians who argue against the Course of Jesus and write discourses dissing the Course. These well-meaning ones do pray. They still call upon Jesus. They feel the presence of Jesus and receive gifts like most other Christians. But can you imagine the unending joy and peace they would be lifted into if they saw the Course in a different light ... or in any light at all?

What other books or documents created under strong spiritual influence have had tremendous impact on our world?

How about Ayn Rand's novel Atlas Shrugged which was declared by a Library of Congress survey to be the second most influential book on Americans today, second only to the Bible?

How does a book become known as second most influential if it does not contain wonders upon wonders? What if you read Atlas Shrugged not with the intellect's inescapable prejudgments and ego-desire to criticize, but with wide open wonderment, letting it work on you?

Or how about the U.S. Constitution? How much liberty has this document secured around the world since its inception? How much prosperity has it made possible? How many ruthless dictators and slave masters has this one document sent into retirement?

Is it possible that the Spirit of Freedom stimulated the adoption of the U.S. Constitution and the document offers wonderment when read in light?

"Article. I.
Section. 1.
All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives."

People governing themselves via elected representatives? Okay so maybe you don't always feel represented. Maybe you haven't always looked in light and have been tempted to fear that America has turned into an aristocracy of lobbyists or a state of judicial despotism. But try seeing in divine light. Allow the Holy Spirit to show you how a system of governmental checks and balances, even legislative checks and balances, serves you with infinitely more possibilities than would kings, dictators, oligarchies, or tribal thugs.

"Article. II.
Section. 1.
The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice President, chosen for the same Term, be elected, as follows..."

In a recent Reason Magazine article, various journalists and academics gave their opinion as to who was the best American President:

Richard Epstein ... a professor of law at the University of Chicago and author, most recently, of Skepticism and Freedom: A Modern Case for Classical Liberalism (University of Chicago): "Favorite president: I’m certainly a Calvin Coolidge fan; he made some mistakes, but he was a small-government guy."

Robert Higgs ... a senior fellow in political economy at the Independent Institute and author, most recently, of Against Leviathan (Independent Institute): "Favorite president: Grover Cleveland, because he, more so than any of the others, acted in accordance with his oath to preserve and protect the Constitution, despite great pressures to act otherwise."

Glenn Garvin ... author of Everybody Had His Own Gringo: The CIA and the Contras (Brassey’s): "Favorite president: William Henry Harrison caught pneumonia while delivering his inaugural address, lay in bed barely conscious for six weeks, and then died, his presidency having done hardly any damage to the country."

Ah, the value of seeing in light! We are able to rejoice in the great undoers among U.S. Presidents as well as the doers. If we take time to study the history of the world's dark, dark eras of oppressive rulership and then read the U.S. Constitution, we are almost blinded with its brightness. Some might even say the U.S. Constitution is a wonder of wonders.

But the real wonder of wonders is the light which can be seen anywhere and everywhere if we look for it.

In the joyous film Lion King 1 1/2, the spiritual teacher, Rafiki, is asked by Timon and Pumbaa how to find paradise. He answers "Look beyond what you see!"

In Lesson 91 of A Course in Miracles Jesus says:
"It is important to remember that miracles and vision necessarily go together. This needs repeating, and frequent repeating. It is a central idea in your new thought system, and the perception that it produces. The miracle is always there. Its presence is not caused by your vision; its absence is not the result of your failure to see. It is only your awareness of miracles that is affected. You will see them in the light; you will not see them in the dark."

This holiday season, wouldn't it be wonderful to see as Jesus urges us to see? What if we all made a commitment to practice constantly looking beyond what we see, looking from the light in us to the light in all, whether we're looking at a U.S. President, a book, a document, a colorful display of Christmas decorations, or a painful scene on the news?

What will happen if we see everything in a new light, the only light, a wondrous light?

Maybe we will not only see ... but might very well also hear as if a chorus is being sung in our mind by angelic Christmas carollers:

"Wonder of wonders!"
