Prayer for Christmas!

As Christmas season works its magic on people, even crotchety atheists finally cannot resist loving the deeply enjoyable feeling that is aroused by happy Christmas songs and numerous Christmas movies showing the miracles of joy and giving, innocence and compassion.

Usually in stories full of Christmas spirit a prayer is answered, if not an obvious prayer then an unspoken prayer of the heart and soul. And for a moment you might think there is nothing more wondrous than a Christmas prayer being answered.

What if that was true? What if there is a prayer being answered especially at Christmas time which is so deep and so ancient and so primal that its memory is long forgotten, or if not forgotten then a faded fantasy?

What if during the Christmas season everyone on earth ... enjoying Christmas songs and movies or not, rejoicing in the Christmas spirit or not, living in a Christian region or even knowing nothing about Christianity.... What if everyone on earth undergoes changes inside which may or may not be obvious and certainly could never be explained by scientists lost in their intellectual perplexities?

What if there is a HUGE UNIVERSAL PRAYER being answered, especially around Christmas time?

In his modern day revelation, A Course in Miracles, Jesus does in fact indicate there is a universal answer:

"It is crucial to say first that this is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what to take when. It is just because you are not ready to do what you should elect to do that time exists at all. You will see miracles through your hands through me." (ACIM: Introduction ... unedited version)

The Holy Bible also implies a universal answer:

"But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1: 20-21)

Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists might argue something like: "Gotcha! Your own Bible doesn't say Jesus saves ALL people, it only says HIS people." But such an argument is only a device to attempt to satisfy ego. Jesus himself tells us it is not the FORM but the underlying course which EVERYONE must ultimately take, it is not the religion or theology that matters, but only the final goal which is the same for everyone:

"A universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary. It is this experience toward which the course is directed. Here alone consistency becomes possible because here alone uncertainty ends." (ACIM: Clarification of Terms)

Although those born in a Christian culture might be guided for the sake of maximum efficiency in their particular society to learn and teach a form of the course using Christian terms, it eventually becomes clear that there is a plan which applies to everyone universally:

"To plan ahead is good advice in your world, where you should and must control and direct where you have accepted responsibility. But the UNIVERSAL PLAN is in more appropriate hands. You will know all you need to know. Make no attempts to plan ahead in this respect." (ACIM: Introduction to Miracles ... unedited version)

A Course in Miracles, given to us by Jesus' holy spirit which is everywhere present, repeatedly states that all problems anyone perceives are really only one problem with one solution, and the only question is are we ready for the solution?

"You made the problem which God has answered. Ask yourselves, therefore, but one simple question; "Do I want the problem or do I want the answer?" Decide for the answer, and you will have it, for you will see it as it is, and it is yours already." (ACIM: Chap. 11, The Problem and the Answer)

But then deciding for the answer ... really, really, REALLY deciding for the answer ... is the same as praying for it, isn't it? And to pray for the answer is to pray for salvation, final once and for all time salvation from pain, fear, guilt, and death. Which means to pray for the savior to be born.

Christians (as well as adherents of other religions) may argue: "But the savior has already been born." And of course you can agree. The instant God gave the answer, the savior was born. But have you experienced the savior's birth in your own consciousness, in your awareness, in feelings powerfully felt deep inside yourself and extending out to the far reaches of the universe?

Because Christmas is about you, isn't it? It's about your salvation. It's about Christ being born again in you, wouldn't you say?

So the prayer for Christmas turns out to be your prayer for the one and only experience you have ever really wanted, your prayer for the one and only bridge to heaven. If put into words, it might be something like this:

“With all my heart and soul...
I want the experience of...
Christ being born...
right now...
right here...
this moment...
this holy instant...
this blessed Christmas present!"
