"E Pluribus Unum!"
(From Many, One!)

America's venerable slogan "E Pluribus Unum" (From Many, One) is proving to have a much deeper and more far reaching spiritual meaning than intellectually inclined historians would have ever guessed.

As the world becomes freer, with more trade among countries, more sharing among cultures, more understanding among peoples, and ultimately more love everywhere, those who psychologically cannot handle a more open world will sometimes react with frustration and the initiation of violence, true or false?

Listen inside and see if the Age of Aquarius is bringing such rapid change not only spiritually, but in innovative technological wonders, that an almost automatic resistance might be felt by those who look back longingly and see an imagined greener grass in past eras.

Listen to your spirit and see if American free enterprise is bringing to the earth so much opportunity for the experience of joy that a certain amount of backlash hatred against America by those who do not consider themselves worthy of very much happiness is almost inevitable.

We hear of terrorist Jihads against America as well as supposedly spiritual justifications for acts of destruction by environmentalist miscreants, but are these initiations of violence guided by God, by the spirit of truth? Listen inside.

Those with open spiritual eyes can see clearly that there is an anti-capitalist mentality struggling against extinction in a new world of high technology and ever freer trade, and this mentality wants nothing more than war with the United States. But this anti-capitalist mentality is guided by grievances, twisted logic, and false premises ... not by God.

While no spiritually tuned-in person would claim that the American political/economic system is anywhere near evolved to perfection, the Holy Spirit is clearly working within the American consciousness and by extension within the American system to bring about a spiritually oriented world of peace, individual freedom, and undreamed of well-being and prosperity.

Brothers who are highly tuned-in spiritually, and who have had opportunities to notice the signs and signals which have flashed ever since the founding of the United States, can see unmistakably that the Holy Spirit is using America in mighty ways to bring about a society on earth which will eventually offer a reasonably good reflection of the heavenly state of being.

The magnitude of freedom of enterprise which the Holy Spirit supports will lift the quality of life on earth unimaginably. Aquarian Age capitalism is not the kind of misnamed "capitalism" we've seen so far in history in which the ego-interests of greedy businessmen are hopelessly intertwined with the ego-interests of power-hungry politicians. True capitalism has nothing to do with lobbyists and favorable legislation and imperialistic tendencies. The Holy Spirit's capitalism has nothing to do with people feeling subjugated and everything to do with people feeling incredibly blessed with amazing opportunities.

When the Holy Spirit's plan evolves fully on earth, for the first time in history we will truly see all the seemingly individualistic pursuits of happiness combine for the achievement of everyone's happiness. All disparate desires will be seen as currents joining to make up the wave of one overriding desire. E Pluribus Unum!

Perhaps nowhere can the principle of E Pluribus Unum (From Many, One) be seen so clearly as in the mushrooming understanding that although the names of God are many, God is one; although religions are many, spirituality is one; although our perspectives might be different, the final truth of all of us is one.

The United States of America is home to people of more religions than any other country on earth in history. In addition to hundreds of varieties of Christian churches and Jewish synagogues, the American landscape is increasingly sprouting Muslim mosques, Buddhist temples, Hindu ashrams, Sikh gurdwaras, and thousands of other official religious gathering places, not to mention uncountable home and wilderness gatherings for spiritual purposes. As residents of the island of Mauritius have known for decades, such great diversity can only bring about a feeling of oneness.

When a population consists of only two religions, it's far too easy to focus on surface differences and justify resistance against the "others." Look at the history of ongoing wars between Catholics and Protestants, Shi'ites and Sunni, Ultra-Orthodox and Reform, Shaivites and Vishnites.

On the other hand, the extreme diversity of a free enterprise culture such as America makes it difficult to focus on surface differences and much easier to feel the oneness which all people share beneath the surface appearances. The more diverse the culture, the more firmly the feeling is perpetuated: "beneath all these surface differences we are all one." The more a culture glorifies individualism and acceptance of individual differences, the more respect people have for each other and the more inclined people are to be in touch with a sense inside themselves which says, "We're all in this together!" E Pluribus Unum.

Those of us who have studied A Course in Miracles have come to the understanding that surface appearances mean nothing. It's not uncommon to hear a student of A Course in Miracles say something like, "I'm everything! I'm a Christian! I'm a Hindu! I'm a Muslim! I'm a Jew! I'm an atheist! I'm everything!" Someone opening up spiritually begins to feel and "see" the oneness of everyone.

Is this to say that the American free enterprise system, imperfect as it is, tends to teach implicitly what A Course in Miracles teaches explicitly? Listen inside and see what you hear. Do not listen to your intellect like those historians who miss the broader picture. Listen to your spirit.

Is it an accident that A Course in Miracles given by Jesus was written down by an American in America?

Is it a random quirk that A Course in Miracles has spread much more rapidly in America than any other country?

Could it be that American citizens are destined to experience far more freedom than people of any country have ever yet known in history so they may reflect and facilitate spiritual opening like the world has never yet seen?

Is it possible that the American slogan, "E Pluribus Unum," has everything to do with America's spiritual role in the world and that it has always been America's destiny to teach the world the spiritual truth that although the appearance is of many, the reality is one?

When we open spiritually we look inside ourselves and see that though the desires we harbor might seem like many, there really is only one; though the thoughts in our mind could possibly seem like an unruly multitude, there really is only one; though the mental pictures flashing may seem like a thousand television channels all being shown at once, there really is only one; though the feelings we feel might range from the darkness of an ocean's depth to the brightness of the sun, there really is only one.

In the end we listen inside to our spirit and find that no matter what country we were born or raised or live in we are the spirit of America singing out with all our heart and soul:

I appear to be many!
But really I am one!
