What are

Wall Ranks?

Have you ever noticed that some ranks in a skill seem to be much harder than others in the same skill? This is due to something that DragonRealms adventurers have termed "wall ranks". In your primary skillset, wall ranks come every 8 ranks, in your secondary skillsets they come every 4 ranks, and in your tertiary skillsets every other rank is a wall rank. Wall ranks affect how fast you absorb the experience in your pool. For example, when I am at a wall rank in a primary skill, I will go from mind lock to bewildering in one pulse, but if I am right after a wall rank I go from mind lock to concentrating in one pulse. The formula someone figured out for what percent of your pool you will absorb in one pulse is:

(WRI/9) * [(WIS+70)/200]

Where WIS is your wisdom, and WRI is what is called a Wall Rank Index. For primary skills, the WRI varies from 2-9, for secondary skills it varies from 2-5, and for tertiary skills it varies from 2-3. When you are right at a wall rank the WRI is 2, and for each rank before it the WRI increases by one. So for a primary skill right after a wall rank, your WRI is 9, the next rank is 8, etc.

So how do you know which ranks will be wall ranks? Apparently, it depends on when your character was created. For very old characters, wall ranks occur when you are trying to rank up to a rank divisible by 8 (4 or 2 for secondary or tertiary skills). For other characters, where your wall ranks occur seems to depend on how many ranks you started with in the skill. So if you started with 3 ranks in a primary skill, your wall ranks would occur when you are trying to reach a rank divisible by 8 plus 3 (11, 19, 27, etc). To find out where your wall ranks are, just keep track of how much you learn from one pulse at mind lock for each rank. The one with the lowest pulse will be the wall rank.

Thank you, come again.
