PLANNING A UNIT

1. Select the unit and how long you will spend on it.

2. Define your goals for that unit.

3. Gather resources (books, videos, music, artwork, supplies).

4. Set up field trips, people to contact.

5. Break unit into segments (usually weekly).

6. Plan details.

Keep a balance between:

Doing ----- Seatwork

Discovery ----- Telling

Assignments ----- Time for "rabbit trails"

Process ----- Product

Independent ----- Supervised

Long projects ----- Short projects

7. Plan a wrap-up for your unit.

Some ideas:

Written test.

Dramatization (play, feast, dramatic reading)

Oral report (tell Dad or Grandma about the unit)

Play games (Jeopardy style, Trivial Pursuit, bought games on the topic)

Written report, novel, poem...
