~Why We Homeschool~ I thought I would share here a short article I wrote a few years ago to answer, mainly for myself, the question of WHY WE HOMESCHOOL. Let me first state that I believe wholeheartedly that each family must look to the Lord for His leading in what direction to take in educating their children. I do not believe that anyone has the right to claim to know what is best for someone else's children. While I see homeschooling as being the best possible choice for our family, and believe that any family can benefit from it, I do not judge other Christians who choose to go the route of public or private schooling. I think it is an awful shame when Christians attack one another for their educational choices--whichever direction they take. We must love and encourage one another, for the Lord designed each of us differently, and He has said that we are all different parts of one body, HIS body. Let us build each other up, not tear each other down. That said, here are my thoughts on why I see homeschooling as the best choice for us! WHY I HOMESCHOOL . . . . . There are really so many advantages. Obviously, there's the benefit of one-on-one tutoring. A classroom teacher certainly cannot customize each lesson for each of 20 to 30 students every day. A homeschooler can for each student. Also, a homeschool student can be given the extra teaching needed for him to master even his "weak" subject areas. Other obvious advantages include the absence of negative peer influence--which comes not only from the other kids these days, but also from those in positions of authority: teachers, "counselors," and administrators. Also, homeschooled children can be fully educated about their faith, which gives them a stronger spirit and a greater self-confidence. I don't believe everyone should run out and start homeschooling. I believe that anyone who can read CAN homeschool, because there are free libraries in almost every community [and, of course, now the Internet] and that opens the door for educating oneself and in turn, one's children. I believe that the education of one's children is the responsibility of oneself and no one else. It is up to PARENTS to decide how to accomplish the educating of their children. If they choose to send their children to public or private schools, they are still RESPONSIBLE for seeing that their children are being educated well, and educated correctly. Too many parents believe that once their children enroll in a school program, public or private, that the responsibility for the children's educations becomes that of total strangers: teachers. Which brings up another advantage of homeschooling over public school: when parents become their children's teachers (which they inherently ARE from birth anyway), the children get the benefit of being taught by someone they know and trust--and someone who knows them well. They are not thrust under the authority of total strangers whose world-view (& therefore, educational slants) may differ greatly from the children's parents, and whose moral character is no longer allowed to be scrutinized. And ultimately because it is my responsibility. I don't need to give someone else that responsibility if God enables me to do it. And He has. "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance; for ye serve the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:23-24 |
