~ Celebrating Birthdays ~
A birthday is a special day for anyone. The more important that person is in your life, the more significant the birthday. Many people view their own birthdays as something they would just as soon forget and many people feel that birthdays are nothing more than another day. I do think that deep down inside everyone wants to be recognized on their birthday. It is what makes you human and every year is a benchmark and an accomplishment. There are those people who feel guilty when they are showered with gifts and attention and there are those people who thrive on it. It is definitely a personal thing and an event in one's life that should be recognized in some form.
How you choose to recognize someone's birthday depends on how well you know a person. People you know intimately (your lover or spouse) should get the utmost attention and the most thoughtful presents. It should be something very personal and loving that carries sentimental value. It is not a matter of how much money you spend but rather how well you spend the money you have. A birthday gift should be something exciting, something very different yet very personal with your own signature and personality. It is a wonderful thing to give someone a birthday gift that will remind them of you down the road. My rule of thumb is to not buy anything that you have to plug in. Appliances and gadgets are things that people will buy for themselves anyway. It could be construed as an insult to buy someone an appliance (the kitchen gadget thing).
Children should receive gifts that have some "staying" power. It is far too easy to buy a video game or a toy that will be a novelty for about 2 to 3 weeks. Stuffed animals are usually a very good idea because children collect them and will in all likelihood keep them through their teens and early adulthood. It is important that the stuffed animal be of good quality and an animal appropriate to them. Colourful and interesting books and movies are also good ideas because they can be kept and looked at many times over. Sometimes it is a nice birthday gift to just do something fun that a child has dreamed of doing. It could be a couple hours of bowling, an afternoon of ice skating, a special day at a museum or zoo, or it could be something as simple as going for a picnic or a nice sit-down dinner.
Birthday gifts for friends and family need only be simple things. A bottle of wine, a good book, theatre tickets or something for the house or apartment. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just a thoughful reminder that you didn't forget their birthday. I have always found it difficult to buy something personal for friends and family that seem to have everything. It is better to go for the "safe" thing than to try and buy something that has a chance of being inappropriate or clashes with their style or decor.
Buying that special birthday gift for that special someone is the one thing you should really try to do well. It may take more time than you think. It does require the skill of knowing this person well enough to know what tugs at their heart. A birthday gift to a lover is an opportunity to reaffirm your commitment of love to them. Chances are they will be expecting something "big" from you (significant not expensive) because your affirmation of their birthday carries the most weight in their mind. The gift should be intimate and sentimental that will stand the test of time. It should be something unique to the two of you that will remind them of you every time they look at it or use it.
I ran across an interesting birthday present not too long ago. It is actually quite a novel idea and I have decided to give this to my girlfriend because I thought it was such a wonderful thing to do. I call it "slave for a day". The concept being exactly what you think. You are this person's "slave" for one 24 hour day. They pick the day, the things to do and how long the slavery lasts. You are at their mercy for every whim, desire and want that they may have for that day. You can choose to spend money on them (up to a limit) but it is their call what to do with this money and when they want to spend it (during slave day only). To validate the slavery you issue this person a "live" cheque with your signature. It shows that you mean business and it isn't a hoax. I think it is a truly loving way of showing someone that you would do anything for them....
It is always a nice thing to spend some quality time with someone on their birthday. Traditionally I have gone out to a nice restaurant for a birthday brunch or dinner with my significant other. This is usually an add-on to things we will already do together but it is a nice way of letting the other person relax and feel pampered (especially if they are not accustomed to it). It is very important that birthdays be remembered as happy moments and not just another routine day.
Pure and simple...
