Nissan Primera = 3 out 5 stars
Nissan Primera (1990-96) Parker's Rating = 3 out of 5 stars Value Entry level L and Equation are basic but spec is generous on LX and above; tacky special editions are not worth any extra. Costs Fuel economy OK; Nissan servicing is costly and parts pricey - try to find an independent specialist. Reliability Good record; problems mainly result from high mileages and lack of care. Driving Precise and well weighted steering; lots of grip and good poise; superior handling plus fun factor; crisp gear change and excellent controls. Performance The 1.6 is perfectly acceptable; free-revving 2.0 litre delights, especially in 2.0e; diesel does its job dutifully. Comfort Adequate room inside for four adults; good ventilation, solid build and quality finish; practical design but dull and dated-looking cabin. Image Lacks imagination; a mini-cabber's favourite; dependable but forgettable Safety Safety upgrades in 1993 with side impact beams, followed by airbag in 1994; predictable, assured handling helps overall safety. Security Immobiliser from 1994. Used Price Range £1340 - £5355 New Price range - DISCONTINUED - For Build quality; reliability; economy; nice to drive Against Servicing costs; bland styling; mega mileage mini-cabs The first generation Primera surprised a lot of people when it succeeded in breaking into the tough UK fleet market. Its lacklustre styling was a disappointment, but everything else was spot on - and that's what makes it such a wise used buy today. The British build quality is impressive, there is a wide choice of engines and specifications, and there is even an practical estate. Definitely worth thinking about as a family choice. 4-door saloon /5-door hatchback/ 5-door estate L14' 5" x W 5' 7" x H 4' 7" CarCheck BODY: Better than many early '90s British cars, but beware badly bodged crash damage. ENGINE/GEARBOX: Engine usually sweet but sometimes smoky with high miles - and some have been 'round the clock' as mini cabs. OTHER ITEM: Poorly balanced wheels; electric windows can stick; worn brake discs; alternator failure; rear suspension wear on high milers. Nissan Customer Services: 01923 899334
