Roadshow Trip to KMITL, Nov. 19, 2002:

The ChEPS team consisting of Jon, P'Tu, Achara, Patcharaporn, and myself set out for Ladkrabang around 8 in the morning, thereby officially launching another season of recruitment. This is very fitting since traditionally KMITL has been our biggest source of top students. This marks my second trip to the KMITL campus which, although in Bangkok, is located in a fairly remote area. Even with a light traffic, it still took us over an hour to arrive at the campus. It was early in the morning and none of us were eager to catch any sleep. To pass time, Achara, a.k.a. Yui, decided to play tour guide by telling us some urban legends which allegedly took place at the Ladkrabang campus. The stories included tall tales such as the "Toilet Shrine" and the "Mysterious Stairway" which leads to nowhere. Yui's accounts were naturally met with skepticism, but she and Pat insisted that these things really happened. I dismissed the stories as mere myths, and asked them to produce proof by showing us the places. Needless to say, the pair were too much of a chicken to prove their case for fear of offending the ghosts of Ladkrabang.

The roadshow itself couldn't have gone smoother, and everything went as planned. The only wrinkle is that the pictures didn't come out very well. A total of 12 Year-4 students showed up for the presentations, and most showed keen interest in our program. The show ended with a Q&A session led by Yui/Pat who are themselves KMITL alumi. The session went so well that we ended up spending about one and a half hours there. Yui and Pat were most helpful in sharing their personal experiences in ChEPS with the students. In fact, we couldn't get Yui to stop. In the end, I suggested that we bring her to every roadshow and designate her as the official "ChEPS Emissary" to help market the ChEPS program. Of course, this wouldn't be fair to the other Class-5 students who I'm sure will have a lot to say about their experiences in ChEPS as well. The trip ended with a lunch at "Punch", which sadly is the only decent Thai foodshop around the campus.
