House has come a long way
in its nearly 20 year journey. What began as an underground
Chicago movement is now a global multi-million dollar industry,
complete with culture vultures looking to nibble from the
vine of house's success for some quick credibility. In this
age of compromised and commercialized house, it can be difficult
to withstand the pressure to trade in the underground aesthetic
for fast cash. Yet there remain a select few whose commitment
to continuing the legacy of the original house music is
still strong. Manny Cuevas is one of these people.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Cuevas understood
the power of dance music at a young age, listening to the
classic disco and funk of the late 70s. However, it was
while hearing a tape by the legendary Farley "Jackmaster"
Funk that his eyes and ears were opened to a new world.
Relocating to Orlando, Manny, along with his
brothers Jose and Jesus, formed KCP (Kid Cuevas Productions)
in 1985. As a unit, KCP promoted events, becoming among
the first to do so in the area. Their parties garnered them
such a devoted following that KCP eventually became known
as 4 x 4 Nation (4 x 4 being the rhythm of house music).
The name was significant also in that it represented the
bond between the dancer and the DJ, for Manny feels that
without the support of the community, there would be no
need for a KCP.
In 1989, Manny began a show on local station
WPRK 91.5 FM, where he exposed more people to the gospel
of house. The show, which focused primarily on his mixing
skill, was a leading light of the Orlando underground through
1991, when Manny left the station to devote more time to
throwing his own parties and making music.
Manny returned to WPRK in 1994 with a slightly
different concept. In addition to showcasing himself, Manny
spotlighted other DJs, such as Carl Craig, Roy Davis Jr.
and Felix da Housecat, just to name a few. Over the next
three years, his show helped to popularize a number of records,
and is now duly credited as an innovative and influential
show, with copies of the broadcasts being traded around
the globe.
His reputation having been made with his radio
mixes, Manny began receiving requests for live gigs, and
he's taken his love of house music to Detroit, New Hampshire
and Scotland, U.K. Asked to describe his DJing style, he
says, "If I could stick Farley "Jackmaster"
Funk, Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan and myself
in a blender-that would best describe my style of mixing--unpredictable.
At the dawn of the 21st century, KCP/Manny
continues his musical mission of enrolling people in the
school of body jacking with his "Infamous Paradise
Box Parties", as well as his weekly mix show on WPYO
95.3 fm where he takes his listeners on a deep house trip.
He's also begun the process of recording his own music.
For Manny, producing is the logical step in giving back
to the music that has given him so much.
With a resume that includes being a
prime developer in Orlando's acceptance of house music,
host of an internationally recognized radio program, and
floor-filling gigs on both sides of the Atlantic, it's clear
that Manny Cuevas is a house pioneer whose profile is on
rise. Having taken the phrase "house is a feeling"
to heart, his life embodies the ideas of classic house and
it will not be long before more people are asking to join
his 4 x 4 Nation.
