Our Captain

 

Cmdr. Russell F. Wilson enlisted in the US Navy in December 1942. In September 1944 he was selected for the Naval Academy Preparatory School at Bainbridge, MD and entered the Naval Academy in June of 1945.  Commissioned in June 1949 he was first assigned the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) as Assistant Navigator. His next assignment was in USS Missouri where he served in the Operations and Gunnery Departments until April 1952. In May 1952 he was assigned to Task Group 7.1 at Los Alamos, NM during which he witnesses the first thermonuclear explosion. His next assignment was as Operations Officer in USS Turner(DDR-834) December 1953.  In July 1956 he was assigned to the Bureau of Naval personnel in Washington, DC.  He assumed command of COMQUEST(MSO-488) in June 1958. Commander Wilson's next duty was at the Naval Academy where he served in the Executive Department from August 1960 until August 1962.  He n attended the Naval War College, Command and Staff Course, in New Port, RI.  In July 1963 he was assigned as Executive Officer of the USS Mullinnix(DD-944).  In August 1964 he reported as a Logistics Plans Officer on the staff of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam.

He comes to the Hopewell from the staff of Headquarters U.S. European Command. Commander Wilson holds a Master's Degree in international Affairs from George Washington University.  Commander Wilson is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Wilson of Portsmouth, Ohio and married to the former Halma Butt.
