Bruce Pond reports on the time that Hopewell was coming alongside the Oriskany and there was a failure of the Aft engine room generator.  This caused the loss of power to the Helm and the helm was passed to after steering.  The quartermaster in after steering standing facing aft was given the command to turn starboard, while he faced aft, and he turned into the Oriskany and damaged the 01 level aft midships.  The seaman was reprimanded. Another source reports there was a failure of after steering caused by a short in wiring in after steering. Some one was storing their personal gear behind a electric panel.
