Filters required: -

1 Crescent Moon Filters Download them from Plugin Party

2 Fantastic Machine's Paint Engine

Note: If you have never installed Plugins or Filters in PhotoImpact, There is a "Using Plugins in PhotoImpact" snapshot tutorial by Deb DeHaven at PhotoImpact Snapshots.

"Let's begin,"

1. Open a new image (medium size images are easier to work with).

2. Go to "Selection" and make sure that "Preserve Base Image" is unchecked.

3. Go to "Edit"/"Copy" then "Edit"/"Paste as a New Image".

4. Apply Crescent Moon's "Cut Glass" filter.
The settings that I used were:- Tile Size = 10, Tile Transparency = 73, Transparency = 0 (You can change the settings if you'd like) Click OK.

5. Right click on your "object" and select "Duplicate". You now have two objects the same.

6. Go to "Edit"/"Rotate & Flip"/"Flip Horizontally", then "Edit"/"Rotate & Flip"/"Flip Vertically"

7. Now for the fun part. Again, right click on the "object" and choose "Properties", Go to "Merge" and select "Multiply" (feel free to play here, you can get some really interesting effects using the other options in the "Merge" category). You can also try using the up, down, left and right arrows on your keyboard to move the top "object" to create a more "3D" Quilt. (Don't worry if you have odd bits at the side of your quilt, these can be trimmed later on).

8. When you are happy with your quilt right click on the image and "Select All Objects" then right click again "Merge as Single Object". If you did not use the Arrows on your keyboard to shift the top object (see Step 7) go to Step 11.

9. Now is the time to "trim" your "Quilt" if you don't like the edges, or just want to select a portion of it as a quilt block or background. To do this use the "Crop Tool" (Located in the Panel on the left of your screen). Drag the selection box over your object, When you are happy with the area you have selected "double click".

10. In order to have a straight edged quilt top you need to right click and "Merge All" at this stage, then right click "All" right click "Convert to Object" Missing this step will result in jagged edges on your quilt top.

11. Now to add the borders. Go to "Format"/"Expand Canvas" make sure that "Expand Sides Equally" is checked and the "expand color" is white. I chose "50" but this depends on the size of the border you would like. Click OK.

12. Go to "Edit"/"Trace"/"Selection Marquee". The settings I used were "Tolerance" = 14, "Jump Point" = 1, "Threshold" = 128. Make sure "Show Path Only" is unchecked. Click OK.

13. Go to "Mode"(located on the top toolbar) choose "3D Pipe" from the drop down menu. Don't panic if the border covers your whole image Go to "Material" (located on the top toolbar) and choose "Border/Depth", change "Border" to "3". Click ok.

14. With your border still selected go to "Color" in the top toolbar right click on the box and choose Eyedropper, choose a colour that you would like for your border and click ok. (Optional) Apply "Fantastic Machine's" Paint Engine, "Bad Brush" filter. If "Bad Brush" is not in the drop down menu on your Paint Engine see Deb's Tutorial on the correct installation. Click Apply.

15. Now click on the Background to deselect your objects then right click and select "All", right click again and select "Convert" to Object".

16. Fill the Background with a colour (Use the eyedropper to choose a colour from your quilt) or fill of your choice. If you use colour and want to give it some texture, Use Fantastic Machine's Paint Engine "Bad Brush" filter.

17. (Optional: Select the Paintbrush, Shape Round, Size 20, Transparency 0, Soft Edge 50. then "Effect"/"Paint on Edges". Once again you can use the eyedropper to choose a complimentary colour from your Quilt).

18. While the background is selected press the letter "d" on the keyboard until the "Line and Arrow Tool" is selected in the left hand toolbar. The settings I used were "Outline/"Width"=1, "Style"=dotted line, "Arrow"=straight line , Draw four lines from the corners of your background to the corners of your quilt (draw the lines so that they cover the quilt top slightly).

19. Select the "Pick Tool", click on your quilt object, hold down the shift key and click on the small border, right click "Merge as Single Object".

20. Select "Object"/"Arrange"/"Bring to Front".

21. If you're happy with the result right click and choose "Merge All". Your Quilt is done.
