| James Alfred Hornery standing on the verandah of his home 'Cliffdale' at Giant's Creek. The Timber for the house was cut by Clive Gageler. James' son Harold got the Timber out of the mountains and Clive cut it up on the spot. Tom Ham and James (Jim) Hornery used an adze to shape all the timber for the house. The original house had burnt down. The house was completed in 1934 in time to host the reception of the wedding parties of James and Isabella's two daughters Eileen (Lil) and Pearl who were married an the same day (see the wedding photos below). James had long tables made especially to fit along the wide verandahs of 'Cliffdale'. Afterwards these tables were cut, re-modelled, and shared among the family. At a time when Kerosene lamps were the predominate form of lighting, 'Cliffdale' had gas lights in some rooms run from cylinders. James sold the House and Property to Archibald (Archie) Meyer. Archie was the husband of Unice Hogan, the Great Granddaughter of Hannah Hornery and William Parker. Archie's son Reginald (Reg) Meyer inherited Cliffdale and the adjoining Meyer property in 1963, when Archie died. Both properties were sold in approximately the late 1970's. Whilst the Meyer Family owned the property, it was always know as "Hornerys", acknowledging the previous owners. The house is no longer in the family and burnt to the ground in 1988. The animal that can be seen in the photo to James' right is a cat. It originally came out of the mountains behind the house. It grew to be the size of a medium to large dog and was very fat. It's name was Tiger and he lived to be a very old cat. It was very wild and very few people could handle him. When James and Isabella's grandchildren came to visit, Tiger had to be caged. |
