PETER OMERY (ONERY).......in Australia
When Peter arrived in Australia he is recorded as Peter Omeroy. It has been suggested that Peter could not read or write and so the spelling of his surname was left up to the Officer in charge of recording Convicts details.
It is not clear if Peter had another relationship before meeting Martha, but by October 1803, Peter and Martha were in some sort of relationship, with their first child being born in July 1804. This child was given the surname Bradcock.
Peter's life in Australia can be traced through the various Musters and Census' that were taken in the Colony. He first appears in the 1805 General Muster. He is recorded as Peter Honery, his status is recorded as "Prisoner". He was employed as a Government servant to Samuel Larkin who was a Clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Office in Sydney. He next appears in the 1811 General Muster, he is recorded as Peter Honnoroy, his status is "Convict".
He next appears in the 1814 General Muster, he is recorded as Peter Honnerry, free and off stores. He is recorded with Martha (his "wife") and 5 children also off stores. He is recorded as a Labourer residing in Windsor. In the 1822 General Muster he is recorded as Peter Honary, bricklayer, residing in WIndsor with 1 unnamed  child, we assume this is his son John. His son Peter is recorded separately. Martha is also recorded separately with 2 children (who we assume to be her youngest sons Thomas and James). Ann was married by this time and so we assume she is the missing child. It appears that Martha and Peter have separated by this time. The 1825 Muster shows Peter living on his Liverpool Land Grant of 200 acres, with his sons Peter and John. He was recorded as a Landholder. Peter next appears in the 1828 Census of NSW. He is recorded as Peter Homory, aged 69, "Free by Servitude" and a Protestant.  He was a Bricklayer, employed at George Tyrrells and was residing in Pitt Street, Sydney.
The book "St Peter's Richmond - The Early People and Burials 1791 - 1855" states Peter obtained his Certificate of Freedom on 30th October 1823, many years after he had become a free man, becoming a Landholder around this time.
The Land Grants Book 1788 - 1809  records the following Land Grant information  "On the 8th August 1809, Peter Honory was given Land Grant No 1526 for  60 acres at Minto with rent of two shillings to commence after 5 years."
Mildred Reynolds records the following Land Grant information in her extensive research on the Hornery Family compiled on 1st January 1986. " The 1809 Grant was later cancelled. Then on 18th October 1811, Peter was granted another 200 acres at Cooke, which was in what is now the Liverpool Hoxton Park area".
Peter died at his home in Richmond in 1837. He is buried in St Peter's Church Cemetery at Richmond, but no headstone has survived. He has been recorded as both Peter Onery and Peter Omery in burial records. Martha is buried in St Peter's Cemetery also.
