28 DAYS
LATER...
(2002)
Directed
by Danny Boyle

Danny Boyle (director
of Trainspotting) gives us this film, which I was
misled to believe was
a zombie film. It has many elements of a zombie film,
but isn't one, per se.
It's more of an apocalyptic/survival film. Anyway,
it starts out with animal
activists who break into a testing facility where
apes are being exposed
to violent images and are kept in small cages. The
activists break the
animals out, but the apes have been infected with a
disease called rage.
The activists quickly become infected themselves...
28 days later...
Jim, our hero, wakes
up naked in a hospital. He is confused and alone. The
hospital is empty.
No one around. He dresses and leaves the building, into
the streets of London.
The disturbingly quiet streets of London. Not a
soul can he find.
What has happened? What's going on? We are as lost as
he. Eventually,
he does find 2 other survivors, and then two more. The
outbreak of the rage
disease quickly spread through the populace of England
(and possibly the world),
and those that are infected are mindless killing
monsters. Our
heroes hear a recorded broadcast on the radio - the only
communication they've
heard through any media - that there is an answer to
the infection.
They quickly set out to the location mentioned in the
broadcast, and things
get more complicated from that point on.
It's an interesting film,
with plenty of scares, and much to make you think.
The acting and plot
are good. I enjoyed the frantic off-timed filming of
the infected people
(zombies) and their attacks. The film really gives you
a heightened sense of
Jim's alienation and confusion. And for those of you
who enjoyed the film,
the DVD has 3 alternate endings, all of which are
interesting.
