ALIEN VS. PREDATOR
(2004)
aka A.V.P.
Directed by Paul W. S. Anderson
Starring Lance Henriksen

Quick Rating:  **

Rumors about a matchup between these intergalactic creatures have been heard for well over a decade now.  Ever since the scene in Predator 2 when Danny Glover is in the Predator's trophy room and there is an Alien skull on display, people have talked about a possible battle.  There have been comic books and video games on the premise.  Now we have a feature film.

Unfortunately, the film is lackluster, and lacks all of the suspense and drama and even action that the original movies had.  The plot centers around a giant, ancient pyramid beneath the ground in Antarctica.  Every 100 years, the Predators come to hunt the Aliens as a sort of rite of passage.  The pyramid is detected by satellites due to a heat bloom, and a wealthy business man (Henriksen) finances a trip down there with the best of the best in different fields to discover something new and mark his place in history.  So, this no-name bunch of lame characters end up in the middle of an Alien and Predator battle.

There are some positive things about this film.  And it's that the Aliens and the Predators are in the same movie.  Other than that, it's pretty poor.  It's a tour de force of all the different Predator gadgets and all the Alien species.  They made sure all their bases were covered.  Then, they toned down the violence (most kills are off-screen!) to get a PG-13 rating to rake in more dough.  And that hurt the film.  I expected a laughable plot and uninteresting characters (which by the way, I got), but I did not expect the lame action sequences.  They were just no good.  Nothing new, nothing different, and nothing I even cared for.

... And then to have the be-friending of a human.... gah.

Some other issues with the film :
 * how fast did that friggin sled slide up the shaft?  They were flying on that thing!   Plus, what happened to all their ropes, and the giant winch at the top of that shaft?  conveniently missing as they sled flew by!
* What kind of logic is this - "The Aztec's calendar was metric - they based everything on tens.  So I figure this pyramid rearranges itself every 10 minutes!"  That's more ridiculous than any riddle-solving done on the old Batman TV show!
* Didn't the aliens have a much longer gestation period in the old films?
