BATMAN:
THE MOVIE
(1966)
Starring:
Adam West, Burt Ward, Lee Meriwether,
Cesar
Romero, Burgess Meredith & Frank Gorshin

The caped crusader and
the boy wonder from the beloved TV series made their
own movie as well.
The dynamic duo are up against their four greatest
enemies - the Penguin,
the Joker, the Riddler, and Catwoman. Those fiends
have teamed together
with a plot to conquer the world, and only Batman and
Robin can stop them.
This movie had a big bat budget (compared to the
show), so that our heroes
could have a bat copter and a bat boat. And
Batman isn't the only
one with new toys - the Penguin has a submarine
(complete with flapping
flippers) and jet pack umbrellas.
This campy movie is howlingly
funny at times. There's corny over-acting,
ridiculous situations,
ludicrous riddles and even more ludicrous answers to
those riddles, outlandish
plots, and tons of bat technology. One of the
first scenes of the
movie illustrates the level of lunacy:
Batman, hanging onto
the bat ladder from the bat copter, is descending with
the hope of landing
on a boat. The boat mysteriously disappears, and Batman
is lowered into the
ocean. When he comes up, a big rubber shark is attached
to his leg. Batman
punches the shark, but to no avail. Robin cleverly
brings down a canister
of shark repellent bat spray. When Batman sprays the
fishy prop, it releases
its grip and falls to the water, where it explodes
on contact!
Genius. The colors
are vivid, and the unique tilted camera look of the TV
show is preserved here.
The fight scenes are poorly choreographed and poorly
executed, with obvious
stunt doubles. The dialogue and acting are
over-the-top, and the
jokes leave a bad taste in your mouth. But overall,
this movie delivers
the laughs - intentional or not. And some lines will
stay with you forever
- like these : "Somedays you just can't get rid of a
bomb.", and "The sum
of the angles on that rectangle is too monstrous to
contemplate."
And let's not forget that noble porpoise!
