CASTLE
FREAK
(1995)
Directed
by Stuart Gordon

The movie begins with
an old woman in a castle, who after feeding her cat,
whips a chained freak,
and then drops dead. Turns out she was a duchess in
Italy, and an American
family ends up inheriting her castle. When the
family comes to see
the place, they end up with more than they bargained
for. A mirror
is broken. A prostitute is missing. People speak Italian.
There's nothing too out
of the ordinary here as far as horror flicks go.
We've got the tortured
soul who strikes back. The husband and wife having
marriage troubles, and
a special (in this case handicapped) girl who knows
something is awry before
anyone else - and nobody believes her. There's the
old woman who hints
of a horrible future. The vicious monster who cannot
speak. And so
on.
Visually, there's nothing
outstanding either, but there are some pretty good
effects, with a couple
of gore scenes here and there. The problem with the
movie is that it is
very slow. It takes forever for the monster to start
killing. The plot
is simplistic, and nothing really happens in the movie
until the last 20 minutes
or so. Overall, it's not really worth it.
