CHAMBER
OF HORRORS
(1940)
aka
The Door With Seven Locks

An English mystery more
than a horror film. I wish my version was called
"The Door With Seven
Locks", at least I wouldn't have been as disappointed.
With the title like
"Chamber of Horrors", I was expecting the torture
devices to play a more
prominent role in the film, but they didn't. For
what it is, the movie
isn't bad, but it's certainly not top-notch, either.
A dying man has 7 keys
to lock his tomb, each given to a different heir.
Ten years later, one
of the heirs is dying, and he sends his key to a young
lady, Lili. She
knows nothing of the tomb or the old man, but when he is
murdered in her presence,
she becomes a target herself. She goes to
Scotland Yard, where
a horny detective (and his sleepy partner) takes
interest in her case
(she's good looking, after all!). Anyway, when they
return to her apartment,
it's being burglarized. Someone is after her key,
but why?
They travel to the keeper
of the old man's estate and keys, only to find
that all the other keys
have been stolen! This leads them to the ancestral
house, where Dr. Manetta
(one of the 7 heirs) lives. He is a devious man
who takes delight in
collecting instruments of torture. There is definitely
something fishy about
him, but what? And what about the deaf & dumb
servant? Or the
painting with detachable eyes? And the iron maiden? And
what's in the tomb,
behind the door with seven locks? Well, eventually, we
find out, but it's a
long, slow road. The mystery is good, the comedy is
not, the suspence is
ok, the acting ok... but no real horror.
