CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB
(1964)

Quick Rating:  **

This is Hammer Studio's second Mummy film, however it has no continuity to the first.  This is a movie unto itself.  The basic plot is similar to all the other Mummy movies, with an ancient tomb being discovered (or defiled, based on your point of view), and all those involved being cursed.  The movie moves very slowly at first, but at least it develops it characters.  There's the older archaeologist, the younger understudy, the lovely French lady, and American showman funding the expedition.  Another is added in to create a love triangle.  Meanwhile, the benefactor of this expedition attempts to take it away from the scientists and turn their findings into a travelling sideshow in order to maximize profits.  The mummy in question is Ra, the elder son of Ramses, who got a raw deal from his younger brother, but at least he does get to walk again!  There are no tana leaves in this movie - here, the mummy is ressurrected by a spell of reviving the dead, inscribed on a necklace found in the tomb.

The story, I thought, was interesting.  It definitely plodded along though, testing the audience's patience.  But for the final 3rd of the movie, the Mummy is up and about and killing.  And there was a good unfolding of the truth at the end, as implausible as it could be.  (I know, Mummy movie fans are really concerned with plausibility in their movies).

The look of the film is great.  I like the scene with the Mummy and the American loudmouth in the dark stairway.  I wasn't too impressed by the Mummy's makeup, though.  The face looked like a paper mache mask.  Not very innovative.

Overall, it's probably worth a view for Mummy fans or Hammer fans...but probably not repeated viewings.
