DAY OF THE DEAD
(1985)
Directed by George Romero
Special FX by Tom Savini
Quick Rating: ***
The third installment from Romero's Dead series, following Night of the Living
Dead, and Dawn of the Dead. When "Day" starts, we are treated to a
zombie filled city. I especially enjoyed the zombie with half a jaw,
causing his tongue to hang down past his throat. Anyway, there are
a couple of living people, and they fly back to their protected hideout in
a helicopter, reminding us of "Dawn". Their hideout is an underground
government base, and the inhabitants are either military or scientists.
And they don't seem to see eye-to-eye. The army guys want to play GI
Joe and the eggheads want to study the zombies and hopefully teach them how
to behave. Yes, so they have a whole process in place of capturing
zombies and keeping them as prisoners for scientific observation, and of
course for experimentation.
The middle of the movie is very slow, with constant bickering between the
human factions. There is also some development of one zombie in particular,
named Bub. The main doctor has seemed to pacify him, teaching him and
watching him learn. The zombies are getting smarter, actually remembering
their past, both living and undead pasts. So, as you could probably
guess, eventually, the zombies get through the defenses of their hideout
and attack the remaining humans. Tom Savini provides us with some unsurpassed
gore scenes, all practical special effects. Skin bitten off, heads
shot, arms chopped off, heads impaled with shovels, bowels ripped out, etc,
and it's all glorious. Savini truly is a master of his art.
The plot continues on from the first two films, basically to show us the
progress the zombies have made. Other than that, the story is pretty
unspectacular. The acting is decent for the most part. Dr. Logan
seemed a little un-believable to me, and some of the military guys had some
awful lines, but other than that, they weren't too bad. Some good scares,
some fantastic effects, and a good deal of gore. The weakest of the
three Dead movies, but still a worthwhile film.
