MOVIES DEAD ALIVE

**** This movie is a favorite of mine. If you ever want to have a great time grossing people out, sit back with a few friends and a few brews and pop this baby into your DVD player. Peter Jackson, now of Lord of the Rings fame, wrote and directed this gorefest. We start out on Skull Island (filmed at a New Zealand site that was also used in the LOTR trilogy!) where some sort of mutated or diseased monkey is being taken away. The natives are scared of the animal and chop off any body part that has been bitten or scratched by the animal. Move forward to some city, where a lonely hispanic girl dreams of finding a man. And where a bumbling man lives with his controlling mother. Their paths cross and soon Paquita and Lionel are falling in love. But not if the mother has anything to do with it! While spying on them at the zoo, she gets attacked by a stop-motion-animation rat monkey - the creature from the beginning. Soon she is sick and her wounds become worse. Lionel tries to hide his mother from the public as she seems to be decomposing before his eyes. I'll try not to give too much away, but soon Lionel has a zombie problem on his hands. The story is somewhat simple, but Jackson keeps the pace up and the plot never stalls (until the end when the gore takes its place). This is definitely a B-movie, with some campy acting and scenarios, and it all makes the movie experience more enjoyable. The real star here, though, is the blood and guts. There are a few gross out scenes in the beginning - but those are merely appetizers. Thhe last 30 minutes of this film is a nonstep display of blood and body parts. There are some truly inventive deaths and injuries. It'll have you yelling out loud - either out of disgust or of laughter. The over-the-top violence is fantastic, utilizing a bunch of household items - a blender, pliers, a garden gnome, and of course, a lawnmower. Plus, to go along with the goofiness and gore, there's some memorable lines that will have you howling. My favorites include "Your mother ate my dog! ... Not all of her." and the classic "I kick ass for the Lord!". Definitely see this movie. Where else will you see a whole digestive system trying to kill someone? Or a man fighting a giant womb? or zombies eating custard? Or... ahhh... just see it! Quality: 4.0 Visuals:
