THE
DEVIL BAT
(1940)
Starring
Bela Lugosi

This is a great B-movie
starring Dracula himself, Bela Lugosi. The small
village of Heathville
loves their local doctor, Paul Carruthers (Lugosi).
He is a chemist and
has worked with the Heath and Morton families for years,
devising new formulas
for shaving lotions and other cosmetics. Well, he
isn't as nice as everyone
believes. The doctor conducts bizarre experiments
in his laboratory.
He takes plastic bats (which only move when they have a
close-up... hmmm) and
attaches them to an electrified coat hanger, and we'll
led to assume this increases
their size and strength. He also has
conditioned these giant
bats to hate the smell of a certain oriental
fragrance. The
good doctor then gives out samples of his new "experimental"
shaving lotion to members
of the Heath and Morton families, and suddenly,
those people are attacked
by a giant screeching bat!
You see, the Heaths and
Mortons have gotten filthy rich off of the doctor's
concoctions, and he's
bitter about it and wants revenge. What better way to
get revenge than to
grow giant bats that attack anyone wearing your newest
fragrance?
This is an enjoyable
low budget thriller. The story is simple and cliched,
but entertaining and
funny. You can't help but laugh when you see the giant
"bat" swooping in on
its latest victim. Bela is great as the beloved but
creepy doctor.
His delivery of "Good-Bye" to his next victim is fantastic.
I just don't understand
how he got the bat to screech like he does. It
sounds like one of those
annoying rubber toys that squeal when you squeeze
'em.
