THE DEVIL'S REJECTS
(2005)
Written & Directed by Rob Zombie
Starring Sid Haig, Danny Trejo & Michael Berryman.
Quick
Rating: ****
This is Rob Zombie's second film, a pseudo-sequel to his first, "House of
1000 Corpses". And this is a better film. I'm not sure if I enjoyed
it more than the first, but it is of higher quality. That being said,
it is one sick fucking movie. We follow Otis, Baby & Capt. Spaulding,
the psychotic Fireflys from HO1KC, along on their run from the police.
In particular, Sheriff Wydell, who is hellbent on getting revenge for the
death of this brother.
This film is dirty, filthy, gross, violent, depraved, abusive, ... just plain
nasty. There are no redeeming qualities. It is a pit of reprehensible
behavior, a showcase of morally unredeemable characters. The look of
the film is great. It's grainy. Looks like it came straight from
the 70s. It is a true homage to the revenge/grindhouse flicks of that
decade. But it doesn't seem to copy any of them. It has the same
vibe, but it stands on its own. I am impressed with Zombie's directorial
improvement over HO1KC. That film felt a lot like a music video, with
quick cuts and flashy colors. This one is more reserved in its direction
(there is an overuse of slow-motion, freeze-framing, and musical overlays,
but I can allow him those), but there are no punches pulled when it comes
to Otis, Baby, & Capt. Spaulding, and their antics. We see them
for the cruel sick bastards they are. And it's enough to make most
people puke. I was eating popcorn during some of the grosser scenes,
but I could definitely see how one would lose their lunch at the displayed
brutality.
Not for the weak of heart or knees, "The Devil's Rejects" is for the serious
fan of the depraved horror film.
