DR. STRANGE
(1978)
Featuring an astral-plane-visiting doctor with a white-man's afro
Quick Rating: *
What a yawnfest. I was never really into the astral planes / 4th dimensional
stories that appear in comic books. And Dr. Strange was a character
that hung out in these other worlds. No real interest on my part for
him or his stories. But, being a comic fan, I've been hunting down
the old "movies" made about comic book superheroes. I didn't even know
they made a "Dr. Strange" until I found it on ebay one day.
This in essence, is the origin story of Dr. Strange. He's a resident
doctor at a Manhattan hospital, and outside forces are about to enter and
change his life. An old man, who just happens to be a sorcerer, is
slowly losing his power, and is looking for someone to pass his powers on
to. An evil witch, Morgan, has vowed to destroy this old sorcerer or
his successor, and commands a college coed, who eventually falls in love
with Strange, to do so.
This was from the 70s, and it shows. Slow pace, bad hair, bad clothes,
far-out special effects. It's just really bad. And really boring.
Maybe a fan of the comic would enjoy this, but not me. The powers that
these sorcerers have aren't really explained, except for the Jedi mind trick
that the old man pulls off from time to time. On the plus side, there
was a giant stop-motion creature that Morgan serves. And the main actor
kinda looks like Steve Guttenburg with a bad moustache. Oh, that's
not really a plus, now, is it?
