THE
FLY
(1958)
Starring
Vincent Price

A classic sci-fi film
from the glory days of monster movies. The movie
starts out with a murder
mystery, where a woman (played by Patricia "Mrs.
Cleaver" Owens) apparently
killed her husband by viciously squashing his
melon in a hydraulic
press. This story leads into the story of "The Fly".
A scientist becomes
obsessed with his invention - a machine that will
transport matter through
space at the speed of light - a teleportation
device. The man
is bent on perfecting his invention, and devotes all of his
time to it, ignoring
all else. Then, a mistake is made when he attempts to
use himself as a guinea
pig. While transporting himself, an unseen fly
found its way into the
chamber, and the atoms of the man and the fly mixed,
causing them both to
transform. Can this effect be reversed, or does he
have no hope?
This is a gripping tale
of suspense and horror. There is no gore, and the
effects are from the
50s, but the story and the acting are superb. Vincent
Price has a supporting
role, but he is excellent, as is Al Hedison as Andre
(the scientist) and
Owens as his wife. There is some dated dialogue and the
paranoid 50s fear of
technological advances, but it all plays into the story
very well. Plus,
a great ending. A must see for sci-fi/horror fans.
