THE
FLY
(1986)
Starring
Jeff Goldblum
and Geena
Davis

This 80's remake of the
50's sci-fi classic stands out on its own. A
brilliant scientist
Seth Brundle (Goldblum) has developed a transportation
devise. Trying
to impress a female journalist (Davis), he gives her a
demonstration.
She then wants to publish his story, but he wants to keep it
quiet until he perfects
it. They end up compromising, and falling in love
(awww...). The
device seems to have a problem with living material - flesh.
This is illustrated
to us when Brundle turns a baboon inside out. After
working out the kinks,
Brundle decides to test it out on himself. And when
he does, a little fly
sneaks its way into the telepod, unbeknownst to
Brundle. He teleports
just fine (or so it seems), except that now he can do
gymnastics, and last
for hours in bed. (And wait to you see what he can do
with arm wrestling!).
He continues to change, becoming more like an insect
(Brundlefly!), and then
discovers what went wrong. Is it too late to save
him, though?
I'm not a big fan of
Goldblum, but he's pretty good in this (at least once
they cover up his dorky
face with fly prosthetics). Geena Davis is ok, too.
Nothing spectacular
in the acting department. The story is good, upgrading
the original with more
modern details (genetics, computers, etc), and adding
more serious human issues.
The story also allows the special effects crew
to show Brundle changing
into the fly. And it's those special effects that
make this film. They
are top-notch, and at times disgusting. The gore
scenes are great, involving
fingernails, jaws, acidic puke, and much more.
A must see for gorehounds.
