THE 13TH
(1980)
Starring

Camp Crystal Lake has
been closed for over 20 years since a boy drowned one
year and two counselors
were murdered the following year. Now, they want to
reopen the camp, and
as a new crew of counselors comes to the camp, the
locals warn of impending
doom. And, sure enough, doom comes. The
counselors are systematically
killed off one by one on Friday the 13th.
A simple plot, but with
some interesting twists. This film started the
lucrative Friday the
13th series (now up to 11 films), which mostly star the
hockey-masked killer
Jason. However, he's not the killer this time around -
although he does have
a cameo. A young Kevin Bacon is one of the
counselors, and he ends
up with an arrow through the throat. The acting and
dialogue are poor, and
the visual quality isn't very high. But I like the
hand-held stalker's
point of view camera angles. And the killings are great
(thanks to Tom Savini's
effects). There are many killings, which keep the
suspense up, and it
is an enjoyable movie. Maybe not as enjoyable as strip
monopoly, but really,
what is?
