FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V:
A NEW BEGINNING
(1985)
Starring Corey Feldman

Looks like Part 4 wasn't really the FINAL chapter (gasp!).  Tommy Jarvis
(Feldman from part 4) is a few years older now, and he's being taken to a
psychiatric institute.  He still has nightmares about Jason and still has a
violent streak in him.  At the institute, one of the wackos is murdered, and
that seems to set off a string of murders.  Is is Jason reborn?  Is it
Tommy?  Is it one of the residents?  Whoever it is, he does a lot of
killing.  And that's about it.

Woof.  This movie is bad.  The acting is horrendous.  I thought it was
promising in the beginning.  We have a new setting, and there's a bunch of
new characters, all of which COULD have been interesting if they were
developed at all.  But no, the makers of this film just wanted many wacky
people that a murderer could chop up and impale.  And what's a better way to
introduce wacky characters than to have a mental hospital as your main
setting?  Of course, it's not enough.  They also had to throw in some
greasers, a coke-head & his waittress girlfriend, some trailer trash, and
annoying hillbillies.

And then we have Tommy, and with what happened to him in his youth, he could
have been one excellent character.  Nope.  Wasted opportunity.  The actor
who played him was wooden, and nothing happened to his character.  There's
no delving into who he is or what he feels or anything like that.  He's just
mad and crazy.  And he sees Jason a lot.

Can I ask why there are so many dangerous weapons just lying around a mental
hospital?

What this movie does have is killings.  Many killings.  I counted about 21,
but it's hard to be sure.  But none of them were that memorable (well, ok,
the flare in the mouth, and the be-heading of the guy on the motorcycle were
two cool ones, but the rest were boring).  You hardly ever see the kill
shot...  just the aftermath.  You don't care about any of the characters,
and their deaths are just another scene in the movie.  Nothing exciting or
emotional.  Just mindless murders.  And a few booby shots.

And then the ending.  I'm not sure what to make of it.  I just know I didn't
like it.
